Bareilly Violence: Lathi Charge Over “I Love Muhammad” Posters – What Happened?
The city of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh witnessed tense scenes recently when protests linked to “I Love Muhammad” posters turned violent. What began as a religious show of support after Friday prayers escalated into clashes between police and protestors, resulting in a lathi charge, tear gas firing, and multiple arrests.
How the Protest Started
On Friday, a group of people gathered in Bareilly to express support for the “I Love Muhammad” campaign. The protest was held without official permission, as authorities had not allowed a large gathering at Islamia Ground.
What began as a peaceful demonstration soon grew in numbers, and tensions started rising between protestors and security forces deployed in the area.
Escalation Into Violence
According to reports, a section of the protestors began stone-pelting and damaging barricades and vehicles. There were also allegations that some miscreants fired gunshots during the chaos.
To control the situation, Bareilly Police resorted to a lathi charge and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. In the clashes, at least 10 police personnel were injured, while several protestors also sustained injuries.
Arrests and FIRs
The police detained over 50 protestors on the spot. Later, FIRs were registered against around 2,000 unidentified persons under serious charges such as rioting, attempt to murder, and incitement.
A key cleric, Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, was also arrested for his alleged role in mobilizing the protest. Police claimed to have recovered bricks, stones, empty cartridges, and even a pistol from some individuals involved.
Internet Shutdown in Bareilly
To prevent rumors and further escalation, authorities suspended internet services in Bareilly. This step was taken as a precaution to stop the spread of provocative videos and messages through social media.
Police Investigation
Police officials have confirmed that they are using CCTV and drone footage to identify those involved in violence. Many of the arrested individuals are being questioned, and some have already been sent to jail.

The Bareilly incident has sparked debates on freedom of expression, religious sentiments, and law and order. While protestors blame authorities for mishandling the situation, police maintain that strict action was necessary to prevent larger-scale violence.
